One of the VERRRRY first things I wondered when I switched to a ketogenic lifestyle was where to buy keto bread. Sadly enough, keto and all the different products available today weren't readily available 15 to 20 years ago.
Often times, what I hear most from people who start or have been on a ketogenic diet is that they inevitably miss some of the treats they used to eat on a Standard American Diet (SAD).
And out of ALLLL the questions, I think when it comes to the keto-friendly black hole, I typically hear the question of if there is any bread that is keto-friendly?
And the answer to that question is…
So where do you buy keto bread?
You'd be surprised at all the places that carry keto-friendly bread, including your local supermarket, to your online retail favorites like Amazon.
In this article, I'll go over where to buy keto bread, how to make keto-friendly bread, and even some great ideas you can use keto bread for in other old favorite dishes.
Where to buy keto bread
With keto being all the craze these days, it's no surprise that lots of big-name companies are jumping in the keto space to capitalize. While this sounds bad on the surface, it's excellent news for consumers like you who are on a ketogenic diet. This exponential growth just means you have more and more choices coming out every day.
Now, when it comes to where to buy keto bread, you have plenty of choices depending on how you typically like to shop for your groceries. Or, if you're like me, then you might prefer to make your own keto-friendly bread.
Healing Gourmet has a keto-friendly book filled with over 35 keto-friendly bread recipes. I literally haven't stopped baking at least one of these recipes a week since I've picked it up.
Many of the big-name local grocers have started to not only carry brands that have dove into the low carb/keto space but have even begun to create their own keto-friendly bread. Of course, you also have popular online retailers if you prefer to do your shopping from the comfort of your home.
Let's go over where you might find some keto bread online first. After all, you're reading this while sitting behind your computer or phone screen anyway.
Wondering if there is any keto bread on Amazon?
Here are the three most popular keto-friendly pieces of bread on Amazon to get your fix without spending those precious few net carbs you have available on the daily.
This is probably my favorite of the three loaves of bread listed. Each slice listed on the sola bread nutrition label contains 70 calories with 9 grams of total carbohydrates with only 3 grams of that as net carbs.
The sola bread slices are a bit on the smaller side, but as far as taste and texture are concerned, this is a clear winner in my books.
However, that's just my own unbiased sola bread review. Though if it is of any consolation, my girlfriend, who doesn't quite live the ketogenic lifestyle, thoroughly enjoys the bread as well.
THINSLIM ZERO CARB BREAD
Second, on the list is Thinslim zero carb bread. While the bread doesn't exactly have “zero” carbs, it does contain zero net carbs since, in total, it lists 7 grams of total carbohydrates and 7 grams of fiber.
Thinslim zero carb bread ingredients list wheat protein isolate, vital wheat gluten, and oat fiber as the main three ingredients. I think one of the main differences between thin slim and sola bread is that sola uses tapioca starch, which gives it more of a bread texture, again, in my opinion.
Another good thing about thin slim, though, is that they also carry different products and flavors such as thinslim bagels, thinslim hamburger buns, and thinslim bread rye.
OUTER AISLE GOURMET CAULIFLOWER SANDWICH THINS
Now, if you're wondering if there is a non-wheat based keto-friendly bread, you're in luck. While outer aisle isn't precisely slices of bread, outer aisle sandwich thins are more like a flatbread made primarily from cauliflower.
You can double the sandwich thins as mini pizza crusts or even buy their bigger pizza crust version.
ALTERNATIVE TO BREAD
Of course, if you are looking to have some sort of vehicle for your meat and veggies and it doesn't necessarily have to be bread, then perhaps a wrap can be an alternative solution you may want to look into.
Nuco coconut wraps and Mission brand carb balance soft taco tortillas are two of my favorite go-to's that fit the bill. Also, if you have yourself a Costco membership, I've come across wraps made purely of egg whites called egg-thins that are ZERO carbs that work great for little sandwich wraps.
Another little tip for the egg thins is that you can cut them up, lightly season them, and bake them in the oven for a very low cal / zero carb snack.
Best keto bread to buy for sale at your local store
Here is just a collection of a few stores you might have locally that potentially may carry some keto-friendly bread. I've either come across these myself, or other readers have reported these to me, and of course…
Your particular location may vary.
Best keto or low carb bread at Walmart
So when it comes to Wal-mart, a lot of them tend to carry the same brands nationwide here in the U.S., but some also carry local brands that aren't available to others. Your best bet might be to call ahead and ask before making the trip. Of course, if you were going there anyway, then it may be worth strolling the bread aisle and having a peek.
If you're lucky enough, you might be able to find a low carb bread at Walmart that goes by the brand name the Great low-carb bread company. A few other readers have reported seeing this particular brand in their stores, but personally, I've never come across it myself.
However, you can always order it online via Walmart.com.
Best keto or low carb bread at Trader Joes
One of my favorite grocery stores, I figured I'd make a little section for it… but I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I have yet to see any keto-friendly or low carb bread at Trader Joes. Everyone always asks me about Trader Joes specifically, so I thought I'd make that little note.
And hey, don't kill the messenger!
Trader Joes does come out with new products every day, so I'll keep this updated if they should ever carry one in the store. Also, if you've seen one at your local TJ's then let us know!
Aldi keto bread
New as of late 2019, depending on when you're reading this, Aldi has started to carry a keto-friendly bread that everyone seems to be raving about.
Hopefully, you're lucky enough to have an Aldi in your neck of the woods if you're in the U.S. as they are primarily located throughout Europe and other parts of the world. Although, Aldi stores have been popping up exponentially throughout the U.S. over the past few years.
While the bread is not made by Aldi itself, it was launched as an Aldi find. This means if you're lucky enough, they might start selling in other local grocery stores and can be found under the name L'Oven Fresh Zero Net Carb Bread.
L'Oven fresh zero net carb bread is reasonably priced at $2.99 per loaf and comes in either whole wheat or multi-seed.
Some ideas you can use keto bread for… other than sandwiches
Besides sandwiches, here are a few other ideas I like to use bread for or when I have some bread that's about to expire.
KETO BREAD CRUMBS
One of the best uses I've found for keto-friendly bread is to make bread crumbs. All you have to do is cut the bread into 1″ or 2″ pieces and put them in the oven on 350 for ten or so minutes.
You can grind these further in a food processor with any seasoning you may want or even keep them in little cubes and use them as croutons on your salads.
These keto bread crumbs are a great way to make some hearty favorites like fried chicken. Another option is to use crushed up pork rinds for a zero/low-carb bread crumb substitute.
KETO BREAD PUDDING
If you have a sweet tooth like me, you can use bread to make some delicious bread pudding. Here is an excellent recipe from the hungry elephant blog that I've used to make the pudding portion of the bread pudding.
KETO BREAD FOR STUFFING
With Thanksgiving around the corner, depending on when you're reading this, a great way to use some of that keto bread is for some home-made stuffing. What a better way to still enjoy some turkey and stuffing then with some stuffing made with keto bread.
One of my favorite recipes come from cast iron keto using either the keto bread you have on hand or using his keto cornbread recipe.
So if you've found yourself asking where can I buy keto bread, hopefully, you've found this post useful. These are just a few different keto bread brands people enjoy.
Again, if you prefer to make your own keto-friendly bread, I would highly recommend you check out Healthy Gourmet's keto bread book. The book is filled with plenty of delicious recipes from savory keto bread like cornbread and biscuits to sweet bread recipes like banana bread.
The book goes on to list substitutions as well if you're looking for no egg keto bread or want to exclude ingredients like nuts and dairy.
So is there any bread that is keto-friendly? You bet there is, and most of them will likely surprise you by how much better tasting they are than what you've been used to your whole life.
